Social Justice Activities

The newest social action has been a Be the Light group. This brought all the existing groups together to share what's being done and what could be done in the future.

Never Again, Soup Troop, Green Team, Fair Fight 2020/ Get Out the Vote, Detroit Jews for Justice, Lighthouse (formerly SOS), SafeTalk suicide prevention, and Caring Community.

The most recent activity of the Never Again Campaign is a way to support immigrant families in our Southeast Michigan area. For more information, please contact Joyce May at joyceandrickmay@gmail.com or ‭(248) 756-3883‬. Thank you Shir Tikvah! Once again congregation Shir Tikvah outdid itself. Through your generosity we were able to deliver 150 gifts to adults and children in our community who would not otherwise have Hanukkah gifts. Tih and I want to especially thank Michael Silverstein, Karen Sage, Sheila Henkel, MaryJane Faso, Maryann Nagel, Sarah Chisolm and Lorelai Berg for helping us with this amazing project. I also want to thank everyone for their generosity in helping the Never Again Campaign purchase gifts and Kroger gift cards for several immigrant families in the Detroit area. I especially want to thank the Shir Halev group of students and the adults who helped them, who made soup and sold it at the Hanukkah spree to help pay for the children’s gifts. Allie and Lizzie Bassin, Eleanor Retish, Kylie Fersier, Gideon Batom, Carrie Keough, Mandy Mills and Jan Laurencelle all did a fabulous job. I wish all of you a happy Hanukkah and a happy and healthy New Year. - Joyce May

Never Again

The Torah instructs us 36 times to care for the stranger — far more than it commands us to observe the Sabbath or any other law.
Never Again is a campaign to support the plight of immigrants/strangers on the metro Detroit area.
With help from Michigan Support Circle, we are collecting new or gently used clothing to help an immigrant family prepare for the winter.

There is a donation box at Shir Tikvah with more information on this campaign. If you prefer, you may make a monetary donation. Checks can be made out to CST with  "Never Again." on the memo line.  Thank you!.  We fulfilled the needs of the families for clothing and have delivered numerous gifts for Hanukkah and for Christmas. Thanks to everybody for their donations. Please support with cash donations to help with legal fees.
